As I talked about in my first few posts, Coach Ginny took me through a visualization exercise that showed me and my family by a stream.  If you recall, I saw myself sitting, leaning up against a tree.  My initial vision was a close-up view, so all I could see was a small portion of the trunk of the tree.

Before I go any further with this, I need to back up and share with you how every day I sit at the bus stop, waiting for the kids, and stare directly at this huge tree.  I have been doing this two times a day for six-years now.

Future_crop I love this tree - in the summer it has lots of leaves, full of life.  In the fall it is absolutely beautiful with the bright orange and red colors. In the winter you can see all the limbs and how they intertwine with each other. And in the spring, the tree "pops" and starts to come back to life.

Other than looking at this tree and watching it go through its seasonal changes year after year, I never really gave it another thought.  That was until one day last year it dawned on me - wow!  the changes this tree goes through is very similar to what my business goes through.  Professionally I am hopping in the summer, really shine in the fall, but start to fizzle out in the winter.  Then in the spring, things start to pick up again.

In my second and into my third session with Coach Ginny, I was telling her about this tree and how it was a visual metaphor of what my business goes through.  The really cool thing about this is that my stream vision, the one where I am leaning against a tree - well, you guessed it.....once Ginny had me take a look at my vision from a higher view (looking down on the bigger picture) I was leaning against that very same tree.  The business component to my vision was there all along - I simply had to look at it from a different point of view.

In my next post I will go into how Coach Ginny and I took the "tree component" of my vision and moved it inside, to a physical office space.  And how Thomas Kinkade (yes the painter) has a starring role in my vision.

Delivers a 40 Week eCourse

Client: Patti Handy of Teens Cash Coach is a financial coach for teenagers and family.  She teaches money management skills to teenagers.

Before the Project:

Patti has a 10-DVD set that teaches money management to teenagers.  She wanted to create a digital product that allows her to teach the lessons on the DVD through the Internet over a course of 40 weeks.

Patti had a rudimentary site created by a virtual assistant with a little bit of HTML skills.  She wanted to redesign the site and incorporate the 40-weeks of lessons on the same site.

She wanted to use her new web site header for the color palette.

Project Goals:

  • Migrate her existing website  to WordPress.
  • Migrate an existing WordPress.com blog to the new site.
  • Edit the content to make it flow better.
  • Splice DVD video into 40 weeks of lessons and add content to site.
  • Setup Wishlist Member to manage customers who purchase the 40-week eCourse.
  • Setup sequential delivery of the 40 weeks of lessons.

Highlights:

Patti decided to go for a whole new look. After chosing iTheme’s Architect Theme, Just2Technical:

  • Changed the colors and incorporated her header.
  • Designed a home page where most content was “above the fold.”
  • Customized the tabs to become “button” links to her main products.
  • Added a video instead of revolving images to the home page.
  • Setup a paid membership site which is integrated with 1ShoppingCart.
  • Created a custom landing page after members log in to display all lessons.  Links to the lesson only become available once they reach a specific week in their membership.

Website: TeensCashCoach.com
Technology: WordPress, Wishlish Member

Project completed October 2009. Patti Handy continues to be a client of Just2Technical. We maintain her WordPress site and assist with continued development of her site.

I attended my second Michigan Virtual Assistants conference this month in Ann Arbor. I love this gathering because it’s small and intimate, we really have the opportunity to get to know the others in attendance.

I spent the evening before and after in a suite with four women I got to know last June during the FoVA conference in Niagara Falls. A couple of other Michigan VA’s joined us on Friday night during our wine and food session.

We had two speakers on conference day. Lauren Pibworth spoke about the importance of branding and image and Pam Ivey provided ideas on generating a passive income.

My take away from this weekend was a stronger team; for which I am very thankful. I wish ALL my team members could have attended but some of them are located in other states and one has an ocean between us. Perhaps one day we’ll figure out how to gather face to face, but in the meantime, we’ll focus on what we do best: virtual business relationships.

Thanks to the speakers, Pam Ivey, who hails from my old hometown of Wasaga Beach and to Lauren Pibworth who lives in the same city my children were born (yes, it IS a small world). Also thanks to everyone who had a hand in the organizing of the event, including Tamara Jaros and special thanks to Kristi Pavlik who had two hands AND both arms involved.

Although the official VA Blitz day has come and gone, all three participating entities are still available to you.

Yesterday several members from the Michigan Virtual Assistant Association (MIVA) spent the day in BIGGBY Coffee locations throughout Southeast Michigan. For a suggested donation to Operation Kid Equip (OKE) patrons could request a free 25 minute consultation with a virtual assistant.

The purpose of the Michigan Virtual Assistants organization is to promote Michigan VA’s and to create an environment for networking and information sharing between VA’s. They also have a registry available to businesses and entrepreneurs looking to hire a virtual assistant.

BIGGBY COFFEE Bloomfield HillsThe BIGGBY Coffee located at 1952 Telegraph Rd in Bloomfield Hills was my host for the day. I was very impressed with the staff; they were friendly, helpful and more than accomodating to all patrons. Great customer service seems to be the norm rather than the exception of this fast growing, social media savvy, homegrown chain of cafes.

I set up my table and spent the day working and chatting with the other VA’s via skype instant messaging. I had a couple of appointments show up, far fewer than I’d hoped. I did get to meet with a lawyer I had previously met through Motor City Connect. The other guest was an entrepreneur who owned a renovation company. We talked and then I designed him a graphic for his postcards and placed it on his thumbdrive. I also saved his logo in a variety of formats that he was better able to manipulate.

Menachem Kniespeck of Operation Kid Equip Another of the day’s highlights was when Menachem Kniespeck of Operation Kid Equip stopped by to introduce himself. Menachem cofounded OKE to ensure every child has the school supplies necessary to learn and succeed with their educational endeavors. The organization is working hard towards building chapters throughout Michigan and the United States.

Although the official VABlitz is over, you can still have great coffee at BIGGBY (locations here), you can still donate to OKE (help here) and you can still call me to schedule a free 25 minute consultation! (248-654-1550)

Member Association Site with Forum

Client: Michigan Virtual Assistants, a non-profit association of Virtual Assistance businesses in Michigan.

Before the Project:

The former Michigan VA site was in Drupal.  It was hard to maintain because it required advanced technical skills.  A Yahoo! Group was used to allow members to use e-mail to communicate and provide support to other members.

The website design was developed at the end of 2008.  We wanted to keep the look-and-feel the same because we had changed it so recently.

Project Goals:

  • Migrate her existing website and its pages to WordPress
  • Create a custom coded Member Directory and Member Profile
  • Setup Wishlist Member to manage membership expirations and such
  • Replace the Yahoo! Group with a forum that allows members to receive e-mail notification of new posts
  • Include features such as upcoming events, RFP submission, and a blog of syndicated posts

Site Features:

  • Interactive forum with e-mail notification through AWeber when a new post is made
  • Request for Proposal submission
  • Blog syndicates posts from members’ professional blogs
  • Member Profile with photo, social network links, and custom information
  • Upcoming Events
  • Easy application maintenance

If you are an entrepreneur, Realtor, salesman, or company owner and you haven’t set social media goals yet, contact us and we’ll point you in the right direction. Still not sure how important social media is to your future business? Watch the following video and then decide.

I first saw this a while ago, but when @biggbybob of BIGGBY COFFEE posted it during BrandCamp University, he reminded me that I wanted to share it here. Thanks Bob! Be sure to head over to Twitter and let @equalman know what you thought of the video.
